Gael Monfils has blamed dodgy eggs as the reason for him needing to vomit during his defeat to Ugo Humbert at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The tennis veteran was forced to run off the court early in the second set where he informed the umpire of his medical emergency.
Having won the opening set against his French compatriot on Tuesday, the 37-year-old was serving to level up the match at 1-1 in the second.
The former world No.6 could be seen breathing heavily after going 15-0 up, before suddenly rushing over to the umpire.
It led commentator Arvind Parmar to state: “Looks like he’s struggling, doesn’t he? I think he might need to throw up here.”
His suspicions proved to be correct, as Pierre Bacchi could be heard saying on the radio: “He needs to vomit, where he can go?”
Having been prepared to be sick in a bin next to the court, Monfils was ushered away by a medic, before returning to a round of applause.
However his stomach trouble clearly impacted the rest of his game, as he was knocked out in the opening round in three sets as Humbert triumphed 4-6 6-3 6-3.
Should he have beaten Humbert, he would have set up a meeting with three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
Speaking after his exit, Monfils insisted that his trip to the toilet came as a result of his breakfast choice.
He said: “I think the eggs hurt my stomach. I don’t know, I don’t feel very well.”
A member of his entourage then quipped: “You should have had a pepperoni pizza.”
To which the 2008 French Open semi-finalist stated: “Yes, I should have!
“But I can’t even imagine eating something again right now.”
