OFFICIAL: Blaise Matuidi declares his retirement from football

Former Juventus player and World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi announced his retirement from football at the age of 35 with an emotional message.

The 2018 World Cup winner Matuidi announced on the 23rd of December 2022, that he would be calling an end to his career, having been without a club for most of the calendar year.

He had been most recently signed to Inter Miami with a contract until December 31 and decided this was the time to hang up his boots for good.

Matuidi began his career with Creteil-Lusitanos, Troyes, and Saint-Etienne before establishing himself as a star at Paris Saint-Germain from 2011 to 2017.

During his three years with Juventus, he became a fan favourite before finishing his career in Miami.

In 133 competitive appearances with Juventus, he scored eight goals and provided seven assists while winning three Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia, and the Supercoppa Italiana.

However, the player took to his social media page to make the announcement of his retirement from football, he wrote:

“Dear Football, I loved you so much, Football, you gave me so much, but the time has come to say enough. I accomplished my childhood dreams and the dreams I had as a grown man.

“It is with a lump in my throat, but with pride, that I turn over this new leaf today. Thank you!”

Matuidi has since focused on off-the-pitch activities, namely an investment fund known as Origins supporting technology start-ups which involve more than 50 European athletes, including his former international teammates Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kanté.
